What Do I Want To Do On iLearn?
Have an idea of how to improve your iLearn site, but unsure how to implement it? Not sure what a Tool does? This page outlines the use cases of each main Tool, based on how you may use them.
Page is useful for presenting a single page of information, such as a task description. This tool is best employed when you have important information you want your students to access, but do not want to clutter your main iLearn page.
Book can be used to present multiple pages of sequential information, as a workbook for your students to work through, or as a structured lesson. Like any book, students can jump between chapters or work through them in order.
Folder is best used to neatly present related documents, rather than hosting a scroll of documents, images, and pdfs on your main iLearn page.
Text and Media Area is used to present information on your main iLearn page. You can freely type, embed images and video, and edit the html for more focused control.
Quiz is used to test student's core knowledge and understanding. It is most useful as a formative weekly activity, which allows students to revise the core concepts of the week. Allows for multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical questions, and control over how many times students can sit the quiz, how the questions are presented, and if the quiz is timed.
Lesson is used to design basic knowledge checks in a workbook structure. It can be set up in a linear fashion, or with branching options based on your student's answers, allowing for a more dynamic workbook experience. Depending on how your student responds to a prompt or question, they may continue on, be returned to a previous page, or start down a new path altogether.
H5P allows for the design of more advanced knowledge checks. It is a powerful tool which can be used to create a wide variety of interactive content, including interactive lectures, embedded modules, presentations, games or puzzles, and more!
Questionnaire can be used to make simple surveys for your students using a variety of question types - perfect for when you want to gauge your cohort's opinion on something, give them a simple choice, or gather some data.
H5P allows for the design of a wide variety of interactive content. It can be used to create interactive lectures, embedded instructional modules, games, puzzles, and more!
VoiceThread is used to create a digital multimedia classroom. An excellent tool for multimedia assessments, students can upload audio and video, and also leave comments on each others work.
OU Blog allows for the creation of module-wide, group, or individual blogs. This can be a useful tool for having students engage with their learning journey, particularly if they are being asked to critically reflect on their work and progress.
Workshop is used to build engaging asynchronous activities which include peer-review as a core part of the activity. When employed as a summative task, Workshop gives two grades to students - one for their submission, the other for their review of their peers' submission. Similar to H5P, Workshop can be tricky to set up, but is powerful when done correctly.
OU Wiki allows students build knowledge together, through the co-editing and curation of a set of linked pages. This tool is particularly useful for content-rich units, wherein groups of students may benefit from collaboratively building a study resource.
Forum is a classic option for the facilitation of discussions between students. Students can respond to a single prompt, to each other, and start their own discussion threads using this Tool. If this Tool is being used to encourage engagement and collaboration with an asynchronous cohort, it requires consistent engagement from the instructor to be successful.
Database is a collaborative tool used by staff and students alike to generate a shared pool of knowledge and resources. Through curating the Fields relevant to your database, this tool can become a resource of literature, films, websites, and much more.
